On Friday 6th July, with temperatures above 30 degrees, South Herts had it's biggest field yet of 220 players including 55 professionals from the East Region for our 30th Anniversary Pro-Am. We also had a record number of sponsors for the prestigious event! It was, yet another, beautiful summers day at South Herts and what a better way to start the day than with a delicious bacon roll on the club house veranda, followed by a bit of practice in on the putting and chipping greens while players waited for their tee-off times.
Our first teams took to the 1st and 10th tees at 7.30am with the last morning tee time of 9.40am. In the afternoon play began at 12.30pm again as a two-tee start with players coming in from 5pm onwards where they were greeted with well-deserved jugs of pimms and some dips and nibbles.
Professionals had their scores marked independently by the next low handicapped player in the team and the pro marked the card for the team overall taking in to account the best 2 scores for the hole. After all of the morning scores had been submitted, the score leading the field was a very decent -14, but it was only about to get better.....
4 teams came in with scores of -15, 3 teams finished on -17 and an outrageous score of -25!! Ian Blackman one of the four players in the winning team, shot a round of 64, NET 59, and must be pointed out - 28 on the back 9!! Well done Ian, Mick Mcdonnell & Peter Evans with their Pro, Chris Cutchie, who also came joint first out of the professionals shooting -3 for the day.
The day was rounded off with a lovely dinner an entertaining presentation.
