South Herts Golf Club

The Hudson Trophy 2023

Sunday 3rd September saw the 64th playing of The Hudson Trophy, with Berkhamsted and Welwyn Garden City sent on their way at 7.30am prompt by starter David Stott.

The recently introduced live scoring provided many twists and turns in the first 9 holes, however, what became very apparent was that there seemed to be 3 Clubs in the running, Kings Lynn, Wentworth and most importantly for the gathered masses on the patio, South Herts!

Whilst the teams and their respective Club Captain's tucked into a sumptuous buffet provided by David and his staff the great weather brought additional support from the Membership for the home team.

Wentworth were first to the tee and opened with 2 birdies on the first hole, South Herts followed with Kings Lynn behind, after the front 9 it was all tied at the top with Wentworth and South Herts tied at +5, Kings Lynn were only 1 back. As Wentworth completed their round at +5 South Herts were approaching the middle of their back 9, unfortunately a couple of dropped shots left the team needing a mighty finish, Bobby delivered with a great 12 footer on the last to much applause from a packed patio however, despite the best showing from South Herts in many years the team finished a very creditable third.

Kings Lynn followed their 1 shot loss to Gog Magog in 2022, with another 1 shot loss to Wentworth in 2023! The Kings Lynn team love the course and the welcome they receive every year and will be back in a few weeks for the annual Club match.

The Wentworth team were deserved winners with 4 excellent rounds of 74, 73, 75, 71 for the final +5 total, one of their players is still in the junior ranks, hopefully in a few years time South Herts can replicate.

Porters Park, Thorndon Park, Wanstead & Cannons Brook were the 4 Clubs relegated for 2024.

Many congratulations to Wentworth who we look forward to hosting again next year. A special mention to Sean Brocklehurst and his team who did a magnificent job of presenting the course and to John Charlton and his band of volunteers for once again, showing South Herts Golf Club as the perfect host to a great tournament.

An Addition from Nick Martin -

I just want to say a huge thank you to all the members that came out to support us throughout the day. From the first tee shot in the morning through to the last putt on the 18th, the support was incredible. It really created a wonderful club atmosphere that we should all be proud of.

So on behalf of the Men's Scratch Team, thank you very much. For George, Liam, Bobby and myself it was a privilege and honour to represent South Herts.
