Aprils Greens Blog

Greens Blog 22/4/2023

Finally time to catch a breath and provide you all with an update on some of the fantastic work the team have undertaken on the golf course these past few weeks.

Greens

Since our last blog the greens have undertaken some further work to improve upon surface performance. We have aerated with 8mm solid tines, which has been followed up with a light top dressing. The light, frequent showers have allowed us to ensure all material has been well worked in. Greens have also received their scheduled liquid feeds to maintain good grass plant health.

Approaches

We begun some work on the approaches this week by verti cutting and cutting. This operation removed some decaying material in the top 10-15mm. It also helped to stand the sward up prior to cutting, removing any longer lying flat grasses. The approaches were then aerated with 12mm solid tines, followed by a light top dressing. Approaches and collars have also received their scheduled granular slow release fertiliser.

Tees

The team have also undertaken work on the tees. We have scarified all the tees with a clean follow on cut. This operation removed all decaying material in the top 10-15mm, leaving a much cleaner surface prior to cut. We then over-seeded all the tees, followed by a scheduled granular slow release fertiliser. This week tees have been aerated with 12mm solid tines, followed by a light top dressing.

Fairways

The fairways have had a scheduled foliar spray application of Urea and Sulphate of Iron. We raked the fairways this week, removing some decaying material in the top 10-15mm. This material was blown off the fairways prior to a clean cut. If conditions allow, we will carry out a further rake on the fairways in the next weeks, as this is a relatively non disruptive operation, but gives an excellent finish to the fairways, allowing longer lying grasses to be stood up prior to cutting. Later in the year we do plan on doing a full intense scarify on the fairways.

Other Work

Aside from regular maintenance works, Ben has been busy in the workshop carrying out some repair work and routine maintenance on the machinery fleet. We have also carried out a full cut of all areas on both the Vardon & Rees Course.

Next week we have a full team of greens staff, as we have been a reduced team for the past 4/5 weeks. This will allow us to catch up on outstanding tasks and further increase presentation of the golf course going into the bank holiday weekend.
