It was our pleasure to welcome golfers from Berkshire, Essex, Hampshire and of course Hertfordshire to this year’s Harry Vardon Cup & Dai Rees Bowl.
On the hottest day of the year with temperatures topping 34 degrees, we enjoyed a full field of 72 players, littered with golfing talent including serval plus handicap golfers accepting the annual challenge of 36 holes played over the Vardon course.
Morning rounds saw strong scores being posted by Rob Watkins (Hadley Wood), Niall Johnston (Letchworth) and Robert Holden (Letchworth) to mention a few, this kept this interesting as they tried to chase down our morning leader Owen Benson from Redbourn. Benson returned a gross 66 which saw him complete the back nine holes in 29 strokes and unbelievably it included an 8 on the 5th hole.
We also had a special moment for Robert Holden (Letchworth) who managed a hole in one on the 14th, and in time old fashion Robert treated the field to a very well received cold beverage to help celebrate, nice touch, well done Robert!
As the sun beat down on the competitors during the second round the boys found conditions tough.
Scoring became more difficult in the afternoon and our morning leader was being hunted by the defending champion, it made for an interesting watch on the scoreboard and it was becoming too close to call.
Rob Watkins (Hadley Wood) posted a steady 71 & 70 and lifted the Dai Rees Bowl title once more, just pipping Owen Benson (Rebourn) on countback.
In our nett competition, the same players were vying for the titles, but the winner emerged with a solid performance in the afternoon to win by 1 stroke. Mark Durrant (Ilford) returned scores of 74 & 74 = 142 to win the Harry Vardon Cup from Robert Holden (Letchworth) 143.
Well done to all our competitors in some very testing conditions, we look forward to seeing everyone again for next years event on Saturday, 27th June 2020.
